Sunglasses or Hat

South Africa is the land of sun and sea, and bushveld and Karoo – the land of 10 months of summer, and I love it.

I was born for this country, for the heat and the thunderstorms and beautiful colours.

But we all know what this fire Africa sun can do to your skin and hair. I learnt early in my life that this sun will kill you if it finds you alone for too long. And everything you allow it to do to your skin in your first 20 years, you will show the scars 20 years later.

Very early I discovered the benefit and fun of sunglasses and hats. I fell in love with sunglasses. All the shapes, colours and sizes. It helps that my eyes are very sensitive to our Africa sun because of hours in front of a computer. So, I grab a pair whenever I leave my house or car. I even wear it over my prescription glasses if I need to see far. For that reason, I also do not spend a lot of money on sunglasses. I do not want them to last forever because I will fall in love very soon with a new pair.

Hats are another favourite. I have a few “go-to” hats that help me out when my grey suddenly appeared overnight. You know that moment in the morning when you look in the mirror and all you can do is gasp. I learnt over the years that big hats with wide rims only look good in the adverts. They are impractical and they cover my gorgeous sunglasses anyway. I bought one and it is still neatly packed away. So, I buy hats with a rim that is no wider than my shoulders, or smaller. If I wear a cap it must at least have something amazing on it like embroidery or sequence.

Hats or sunglasses or both. Protect yourself against our sun – not forgetting the sunblock – but have fun and look fabulous while doing it.
